Film grammar made it shorthand for shock and disorientation, which gives editors a precise tool: play it after an explosion, a devastating insult, or news that refuses to be processed. As a prank it is diabolically simple, since half the audience will question their own ears before suspecting the audio. Use it sparingly and at merciful volume; tinnitus jokes work best on people who do not actually have it.
