Ba-dum-tss: the rimshot is comedy's punctuation mark, a drum-and-cymbal sting that has closed jokes since the days of live vaudeville bands. Its function is beautifully explicit — it tells the room 'that was the punchline' with such formality that it works even when (especially when) the joke is terrible.
